Noun-verb conversion between the poles of predictability and idiosyncrasy: How do denominal verbs build their argument structures?^*

This article addresses the controversial question how non-derived denominal verbs (e.g. wingsuit, kennel, trombone) build their argument structures. Based on selected subsets of conceptually related it will be shown that structures these are flexible though not arbitrary. Without context, evoke frame-like default situations which determined by speakers' shared encyclopaedic knowledge and sensorimotor experience mapped onto a small set abstract event schemata 'predesign' thematic configurations. The discourse also provides syntactic either meets or models our expectations as to context-free readings. In latter case, new (metaphorical) readings contextually created. These configurations arbitrary because meanings verbalized nouns should always (a) in relation contiguity base-noun concepts (b) compatible with semantics constructions.
